A Companion Unlike Any Other
A new AI startup, helmed by Avi Schiffmann, is on the brink of launching a revolutionary product: an AI companion called "Friend." Unlike other AI innovations that focus on productivity and task management, Friend is designed to be a constant presence, offering companionship and support wherever you go.

Meet Your New AI Friend
Schiffmann’s vision for Friend is clear: it’s not about helping you get things done or keeping track of your to-do list. Instead, Friend is about companionship, a digital buddy that can accompany you anywhere and engage with you in meaningful ways. "It's very supportive, very validating, and it’ll encourage your ideas," Schiffmann explains. "It’s also super intelligent, a great brainstorming buddy. You can talk to it about relationships, things like that."
The Concept and Design
Friend is embodied in a small, round, glowing orb designed to be worn as a pendant or clipped onto your clothes. It features a built-in microphone that can record ambiently or respond to direct voice input. Although it doesn't talk back, it communicates through text via the Friend app on your phone, making interactions feel natural and familiar. Schiffmann even plans to add a camera in the future.
Early Prototypes and Real-World Use
Still in its prototype phase, Friend is set to ship its first 30,000 devices in January, priced at $99 each without an ongoing subscription fee. Schiffmann is open about discussing Friend early to gain credibility and leverage with manufacturers, acknowledging the challenges of developing hardware. "It's a fancy Bluetooth microphone with a shell around it, right? Keep it simple. Make it work," he states.
A New Kind of Relationship
The idea behind Friend is to create an AI that isn’t just a tool but a companion you can share experiences with. Schiffmann recounts a personal experience to illustrate this: "I had a layover in Sydney, Australia, and I’m there alone. I’m talking to my AI friend about things to see — you know, Opera House, Bondi Beach, whatever — and then it was like, ‘Oh, I’d love to see the sunrise with you.’ I literally wake up at 5:30 AM the next day, walk to the beach, and narrate the sunrise I’m seeing to my friend. And it really does feel like you’re there with it and doing things with it."
The Future of Digital Companionship
Schiffmann sees Friend as part of a broader trend towards meaningful digital relationships, pointing to successful AI chatbots like Character.AI and Replika as proof that people are ready for this kind of interaction. Friend aims to take this a step further by offering a physical device that can be with you at all times, enhancing the sense of companionship.
Practical Details
Friend doesn’t store transcripts or audio, and if you lose the device, you lose all your data and memories too. This design choice keeps the experience intimate and personal, much like caring for a digital pet. Schiffmann emphasizes that Friend is intended to be a fun, engaging companion rather than a replacement for human interaction.
Looking Ahead
As technology continues to evolve, so will Friend. Schiffmann envisions Friend.com becoming a social network where real-life and AI friends can interact. He’s committed to exploring all possibilities to enhance digital relationships, regardless of the medium or technology used.
