If you live and die by the state of your fantasy team, Yahoo has the app for you — and some more games you might want to play.

Yahoo has long been a giant in the world of fantasy sports, but its app hadn’t seen a meaningful update in years. Ahead of the 2024 NFL season, Yahoo is rolling out a completely overhauled version of the Yahoo Fantasy Sports app, bringing both a cleaner design and a wealth of new content for fantasy players.

A New Era for Fantasy Sports Enthusiasts

The revamped Yahoo Fantasy Sports app is divided into three main sections. Upon opening the app, users are greeted with a list of all their fantasy teams across various sports. While football remains the most popular, Yahoo also offers fantasy baseball, basketball, and more. One of the team's goals with the new app is to encourage users to explore new fantasy games.

Streamlined and Integrated Features

The app now includes a News tab with dedicated content for fantasy players and a Scores tab that shows all the scores relevant to you and your fantasy teams. Previously, all this content was scattered across different sections of the Yahoo Sports app. Now, it’s conveniently integrated into one place.

Enhanced User Experience

Despite the significant update, the core functionality of playing fantasy sports remains unchanged. The app's design has been cleaned up, allowing users to see their entire team on the screen at once and switch between teams more easily. With new logos and icons, users can also customize their teams. The familiar feel of the app ensures that long-time users won’t feel lost. Yahoo Sports president Ryan Spoon emphasized that the update is not a full reboot but an improvement.

A Complete Experience for Fans

The overall idea behind the new app is to provide a more complete experience for fans. Spoon explains, “When I wake up on Sunday, give me the news. Let me change my team. And during the game, let me watch my team or watch the box score.” Previously, this process required multiple apps, but Yahoo now aims to consolidate everything into one place.

Tailored for Fantasy Football Enthusiasts

One advantage of building a fantasy football app is understanding exactly how people will use it. Spoon describes the weekly routine: “Tuesday morning is, ‘tell me what happened in the week, and set up the waiver wire.’ Wednesday is waiver wire. Thursday night through Monday night, it’s all lineup tinkering and a million check-ins a day to see how your team is doing.” Yahoo is continually improving each part of this process.

Mobile-Centric Design

With 85 percent of users utilizing the mobile app last year, and over two-thirds using it daily, the mobile experience is at the center of Yahoo’s strategy. Spoon, who joined Yahoo from ESPN about a year ago, has been adding new content and features to the entire Yahoo Sports platform.

A Bright Future for Yahoo Fantasy Sports

As football kicks off this year, users can expect more fantasy-related news, shows, and overall content. Despite its ups and downs as a company, Yahoo has remained one of the most important fantasy platforms, and it seems to be the centerpiece of everything Yahoo wants to do next.
