Meta’s Upcoming ‘Imagine’ AI Feature Spotted in Latest Beta

Meta’s Upcoming ‘Imagine’ AI Feature Spotted in Latest Beta

WhatsApp appears to be working on an innovative generative AI feature that allows users to create personalized avatars of themselves for use in a variety of imagined settings. This in-development feature was recently discovered in the new WhatsApp Beta for Android 2.24.14.7 by WABetaInfo. The feature will leverage user-supplied images, text prompts, and Meta’s AI Llama model to generate these avatars.

Personalize Your Digital Presence

According to a screenshot shared by WABetaInfo, users can imagine themselves “in any setting from the forest to outer space.” The examples look fairly typical for those produced by AI generators, resembling what you might have seen if you've used apps like Lensa AI or Snapchat’s “Dreams” selfie feature.

How It Works

To create these personalized avatars, WhatsApp users will need to:

  1. Take photos of themselves: These photos will be used to train Meta AI to produce images in the user's likeness.

  2. Generate avatars: Users can then generate their avatars by typing “Imagine me” followed by a description of the setting in Meta AI chat or in other WhatsApp conversations by typing “@Meta AI imagine me...”

A screenshot taken of the info card from WhatsApp’s upcoming Imagine AI user avatar feature showcases these steps clearly.

User Control and Privacy

The feature is reported to be optional, requiring users to manually enable it in WhatsApp settings before it can be used. Moreover, WABetaInfo notes that the reference images can be deleted at any time via the Meta AI settings, providing users with control over their data and privacy.

Launch Timeline

Currently, there’s no specific indication of when the new Imagine AI selfie feature will be generally available. WhatsApp is still rolling out support for its Meta AI chatbot, alongside more general real-time AI image generation for users in the US. Given the issues seen with previous generative AI tools, Meta is likely to take a cautious approach to ensure the new AI avatar feature is robust and reliable before a wide release.

Conclusion

This upcoming feature highlights Meta’s ongoing efforts to integrate advanced AI capabilities into its platforms, enhancing user experience with creative and personalized digital tools. As WhatsApp continues to evolve, users can look forward to more innovative features like the Imagine AI avatar generator, making their digital interactions more engaging and fun.
