The World’s First Dual-Hinged, Triple-Screen Foldable Smartphone is Here, with a Hefty Price Tag

Huawei has made headlines once again with the launch of its groundbreaking Mate XT Ultimate Design, the world’s first tri-fold smartphone. Priced at a jaw-dropping 19,999 yuan (approximately ₹2,32,000 or $2,809) for the base model with 256GB of storage, this innovative foldable phone is even more expensive than a brand-new 16-inch MacBook Pro. The prices escalate further for the higher storage variants, with 512GB costing 21,999 yuan (about ₹2,55,000 or $3,089) and the 1TB model at a staggering 23,999 yuan (about ₹2,78,000 or $3,370).

A Revolutionary Tri-Fold Design

The Mate XT Ultimate Design isn’t just another foldable smartphone; it redefines the category with its inverse dual-hinge design that folds in a Z shape. This engineering marvel allows users to utilize the phone in a variety of configurations, adapting to different needs. When fully collapsed, it functions like a traditional 6.4-inch OLED display. However, unfold it completely, and the screen expands into a massive 10.2-inch display with a resolution of 2,232 x 3,184 pixels. What’s even more impressive is that it can also be used in a 7.9-inch format, when partially unfolded, providing flexibility in how you engage with content.

Top-Tier Hardware and Battery Life

Under the hood, the Mate XT Ultimate Design is powered by 16GB of RAM and is available in storage options ranging from 256GB to 1TB. Its massive 5,600mAh battery supports 66W fast wired charging and 50W wireless charging, ensuring users can quickly power up despite the phone's substantial energy needs.

In terms of photography, Huawei has equipped the Mate XT with a triple-camera setup on the rear, featuring:

  • A 50MP main camera for crisp, detailed shots

  • A 12MP ultrawide camera for expansive landscape photos

  • A 12MP periscope camera with impressive zoom capabilities

Additionally, the 8MP hole-punch selfie camera is neatly integrated into the left-most screen when the phone is fully unfolded, ensuring it doesn’t take up unnecessary space when using the device in its full-screen mode.

Preorder Frenzy and Price Shock

Even before the price was officially announced, the Mate XT Ultimate Design garnered significant attention in China, with retailer Vmall reporting an incredible 3.7 million preorders. While the device’s pricing has certainly raised eyebrows, it highlights the high demand for premium foldable smartphones, even at the top end of the price spectrum.

Global Availability Still Uncertain

As of now, the Mate XT Ultimate Design is only available in China, and there’s no word yet on international availability. While Huawei has not confirmed if or when the device will launch globally, those eager to get their hands on this tri-fold masterpiece might need to wait a bit longer.

Conclusion: A Bold Step Forward in Foldable Technology

With its triple-screen design and a price tag that surpasses even high-end laptops, the Huawei Mate XT Ultimate Design represents a bold leap in smartphone technology. Whether it justifies its price with performance and features is yet to be seen, but there’s no denying the Mate XT sets a new standard for foldable devices.
